Horses can easily escape from a pasture if they find an opening in the fence. For these reasons, horse owners need to take extra precautions when it comes to fencing their property. Let’s explore some of the most common types of fencing used for horses.

1. Wooden

Wood rail fencing can be used for both pasture and paddock fencing. It is strong, durable, and relatively inexpensive to install and/or repair. It’s an excellent choice for horses as it doesn’t allow them to put their heads through or eat it. It’s also appealing to look at if you’re worried about aesthetics.

2. Wire

V-mesh wire or no-climb fencing is commonly used for horse and livestock fencing. This is one of the safest fencing options, as the diamond pattern keeps animals in and out. However, this is on the expensive side of wired fences.

3. Pipe

Often used, pipes and PVC are the most costly fencing options for horses. PVC is designed to break under pressure, so if a horse hits it, there’s a chance it could break. Usually, PVC pipes are only used when there’s an electric fence paired with them to prevent hoses from leaning on the tubes.

Another option is steel pipe fences. While strong and highly durable, these fences have no bending power should a horse run into it, which can hurt the horse. Usually, these types of fences are only used for creating organized pathways for horses to walk through.

Consider Multiple Fencing Options Before Choosing

There are many types of fences. The right one will depend on your house and their needs. Nonetheless, fenced horses are safer and happier, so consider speaking with a specialist to find the right fence for you.
